I bought the set from Rockler but, never used them. The ones I've done were just laid out and cut to what looked good to my eye. I don't think there are and hard and fast rules to them.I have no way of proving it, but I think doing them this way is stronger, at least that is what I like to believe. And they look better. That said I have made my own templates and have a store bought template that I use sometimes when I am not repairing a defect.

The last project I just finished needed 8 ( to cover screw holes) and I used the Rockler template to make them.
